Learning to Fly

Reflecting on "when have I felt most truly alive", I took inspiration from Karen's sailing story and thought about my own experience with an adventurous hobby - learning to fly. A specific memory stands out - I was working towards my license and really needed to practice. But I didn't want to. I was in high school, it was probably a weekend, and there other events and activities my friends were doing. Despite it all, I made myself go out to the airport, and I'm glad I did as it became one of my core memories. It was golden hour, the airport was deserted, winds were calm. I remember flying around the pattern and feeling an overwhelming sense of happiness, peace, and gratitude for the opportunity to be here.

I think there were a few lessons from this experience that are applicable to my life.... 1. While a natural procrastinator, I find joy in doing the thing. Making the effort to progress towards a big goal creates a satisfying sense of accomplishment. 2 (1.5). And on that point, pursue goals that I am proud of and bring joy, not just as something to do or because it checks a box. Don't avoid it because it's hard, scary (new), or time-consuming. 3. Take time to be alone - beauty happens in the quiet moments. This is not always easy as a strong "E" (extrovert) on my MBTI :)

Thank you again for all the beautiful stories, inspiration, and reflection!
